SCAM ALERT: Devious Phone Scammers attempt to take advantage of York County Citizens

SCAM ALERT

Devious phone scammers attempt to take advantage of York County citizens

YORK COUNTY, SC - Sadly in the face of tragedy, dishonorable & devious scammers are attempting to take advantage of our citizen’s generosity. The York County Sheriff’s Office and York Police Department are victims of telephone facilitated fraud in which the perpetrators are attempting to solicit donations for our injured officers.  This attempt includes a York PD emergency cell phone in their dispatch center and their main non-emergency line.

York PD’s most recent report came Friday afternoon, and involved the York PD phone number 803-684-4141 to solicit money from a local restaurant.  The restaurant staff called the number back and learned that York PD was not soliciting donations.

These electronically copied numbers by the scammers make it nearly impossible to identify the callers, but the perpetrators did ask for the donations to be sent via Western Union to a location in Delaware.

There are only three verified and endorsed methods to support the YCSO and YPD officers, they are as follows:

If a scammer calls using these different methods do not send money over the phone. Donate online or in person only.

Please do not send money via solicited phone calls. Do not send money via prepaid cards such as Western Union, Visa Prepaid Cards, or Green Dot MoneyPak cards.  In addition, scammers often ask victims to give them the number on the prepaid card. Doing this gives the scammer the opportunity and access to empty the card instantaneously even if you don’t mail the card to the scammer.

Police agencies or those saying they represent the police agency would never solicit money via phone. If you believe a person is attempting to deceive you via telephone, the best practice is to just hang up. Scammers also will impersonate law enforcement personnel by using names and titles they discover via the agencies website or via news articles.

If you believe you have been a victim of telephone fraud please call your locate police agency and report the incident.
