YORK COUNTY, SC – York County citizens will soon see York County Sheriff’s Deputies wearing new rank insignia. The change is a part of the new Career Advancement Program or CAP, replacing the former Master Deputy Program.  The Career Advancement Program is to establish a fair and objective promotional process and career progression for the employees of the York County Sheriff’s Office and to ensure that vacancies are filled by fully qualified employees.

In this program, deputies may advance to the rank of from Deputy to Corporal via a noncompetitive process where advancements are based upon the completion of certain milestones. Deputies may be promoted to the rank of Sergeant and above via a competitive process that occurs only when an opening to a higher ranking position is available.

“I’m very excited to launch this plan and I believe that it will positively impact many of our employees,” said Sheriff Kevin Tolson.  “We are always looking for ways to improve to recruit and retain quality employees.  Now, more than ever, it is important to recognize and reward quality employees and this is one mechanism to do so.”

To advance through the CAP employees can earn points through years of service, on or off duty community service, continuing education, post-secondary education, monthly training attendance, specialized team membership, physical fitness assessment, and receiving awards, such as the employee of the month.  In addition points for advancement can be earned through military service, volunteer firefighting, or being a member of any standing committees inside the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies will wear the insignia that corresponds to their current rank on their uniform sleeves. The ranks and associated insignia are as follows:

Rank Structure 1 1 chevron, 1 chevron with rocker, 1 chevron and Rocker with crossed rifles, 2 chevr

Worn on the collar of the uniform:

Rank Structure 2 Lieutenant, Captain, Major & Sheriff
