Employment Opportunities
The York County Sheriff's Office has many opportunities for employment through the Enforcement Division and Detention Division. Employment with the York County Sheriff's Office varies from sworn and non-sworn personnel, especially during the selection process. However, many of the minimum standards are the same.
Minimum Standards
- Possess a high school diploma or GED (college degree preferred).
- Must be at least 21 years of age (18 years of age for non-sworn).
- Possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.
- Have not committed or been convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor (Some exceptions for non-sworn personnel is possible).
- Have not been convicted of driving under the influence the past 10 years.
- Be in good physical health.
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Enforcement applicants must reside in the state of South Carolina.
- Reside within 50 miles of the Moss Justice Center (1675 York Hwy., York, SC 29745).
- Have an honorable military discharge, if applicable.
Enforcement Division
Selection Process
- Complete and submit York County government online application
- Once approved, complete Sheriff's Office personal history statement (received via email)
- Ergometrics video-based testing.
- Job-related physical ability test (not required for non-sworn personnel)
- Evaluation of testing requirements and standards (review of scores, etc.)
- Initial structured interview
- Extensive background investigation
- Possible follow-up interview
- Possible conditional offer briefing with the Sheriff
- Complete part II of York County Sheriff's Office personal history statement
- Polygraph examination
- Psychological examination (not required for non-sworn personnel)
- Complete drug screening
- Complete medical examination (not required for non-sworn personnel)
- Final interview with Sheriff and extension to hire
You must provide a copy of your:
- DD-214 (if applicable)
- Driver's License
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma
- Recent Photograph at the Time of Application
- Social Security Card

Detention Division
Selection Process

- Once approved, will be invited to Pre-Employment Testing
- Complete Part I of York County Sheriff’s Office Personal History Statement (to be submitted
at testing ) - Entry-level testing (TABE, spelling, general law enforcement knowledge)
- Evaluation of testing requirements and standards (review of scores, etc.)
- Extensive background investigation
- Initial formal interview
- Possible follow-up interview
- Conditional Offer interview with member of the Command Staff
- Complete Part II of York County Sheriff’s Office Personal History Statement (completed at Conditional Offer interview)
- Polygraph examination
- Complete medical examination (Not required for non-sworn personnel)
- Complete drug screening
- Extension to hire

If a candidate is selected as a sworn Detention Officer and not certified as a Class II law enforcement officer in South Carolina, the candidate will be required to attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia, South Carolina for basic training. Successful completion is mandatory and detention officer candidates are paid their normal salary while attending.

Hiring Time Frame
The York County Sheriff's Office has an extensive employment process as listed above. Given the fact that we take great pride in seeking out the best candidates to fill our positions. Backgrounds will take an average of two to four month from the start of the investigation. If not selected for employment, your application will remain on file for up to one year. After that year has expired, you will need to reapply
